The purpose of any roll pan is to eliminate any protruding portion of a truck or SUV’s bumper. The term “roll” refers to the smoothness of the body lines when the new panel is installed in place of the rear bumper. It fits seamlessly into the curves and contours of that particular body style to create a factory finished look.

Although you will sacrifice some safety used with a roll pan and some states they are illegal because they don’t quality as a legitimate rear bumper, they do look much cleaner and are designed to still house the state issued license plate. Some take the ‘rolled’ look a step further by smoothing out the entire area an opting to mount the license plate elsewhere with a custom mount license plate box.

Most of the earlier roll pans were constructed of light weight, multi-layered fiberglass and where somewhat difficult to install. However, after years of tweaking and exacting, fiberglass roll pans now fit with little to no modification necessary in order to use the factory mounting points and they are still a popular choice because of the flexibility in customizing the panel even further with a completely smoothed look.

Roll pans are now available for most trucks in other materials. You can sacrifice less safety issues with new steel roll pans. They are intended for the same smoothed out look but retain the durability of the OEM Steel bumpers. Also, ABS plastic roll pans are available that are a good combination of the two. They are durable, flexible and can be easily painted to match your truck or SUV. Most of the time, the factory bumper support can stay in tact as well which is not always true with the fiberglass roll pans.
